Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has urged Israel to cooperate in extraditing a former high investigator needed in reference to the disappearance of 43 college students in 2014.
Mexico needs Israel to arrest Tomás Zerón, who headed the Felony Investigation Company, over allegations of serious irregularities in the inquiry into one of the country’s worst human rights tragedies.
“I hope the federal government of Israel acts with respect for human rights, as a result of the extradition of this public official is being requested, amongst different issues, for acts of torture,” López Obrador informed reporters.
In January Mexico mentioned that Zerón was making an attempt to acquire asylum in Israel, complicating extradition efforts.
Zerón is accused of kidnapping, torturing suspects, manipulating proof and embezzling round $50m of public funds.
Zerón denies the allegations.
Israel has assured Mexico that it isn’t stalling the extradition process due to the Latin America country’s stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as some experiences have instructed, López Obrador mentioned.
The disappearance of the educating college students shocked Mexico and sparked mass protests towards then president Enrique Peña Nieto’s authorities.
